John Mary Vianney
1786–1859
Feast: August 8
Patron of: Parish priests
You don't need a stage. Where you are planted, you stay, faithful, quiet, with your whole heart. That was John Vianney: he nearly fails out of seminary, the worst student of his class. They send him to Ars, a village of 230 souls, and there the unexpected happens: soon all of France is making pilgrimage to this very priest, just to confess to him. He spends up to sixteen hours a day in the confessional, wrestling and doing penance; his whole ministry revolves around Mass and confession. Today he is the patron of parish priests. His strength was not brilliance, it was a heart that gives itself away without giving up. So here is the question: where do you stay faithful when no one is watching?
