SANCTI

Cecilia

d. 3th century

Feast: November 22

Patroness of: Church music

You are someone who listens inward: no room is loud enough to drown out the song your heart sings to God. Cecilia was like that. A Roman noblewoman of the third century is given in marriage, and while the wedding feast swirls around her, according to tradition, she sings in her heart to God alone. That same tradition tells how she wins her bridegroom Valerian for Christ; the stillness of her heart becomes witness. In the end she gives her life in martyrdom. Rome has never forgotten her: to this day her name stands in the Roman Canon, and church music honors her as its patroness. So here is the question for you: what song does your heart sing when no one is listening?
